The Annual General Meeting of the Church of Island’s Women’s Association, which took place in Nursing Church on 24th April, expressed great concern about the status of women within the Church of Iceland.
Looking at the gender ratio in offices and responsibilities within the Church, it was revealed that, while in January 2017 there were 84 parish priests in the country, women were in only 25 of the positions, or about 30%.
Similarly, considering all priesthood roles in the country, women were found in 53 out of 146 posts, or 36%.
The Women’s Association said it was conscious of the gender equality policy of the National Church and encouraged parish committees, electoral committees and church members to take account of the policy when choosing individuals for responsibility and office within the National Church.
